Information about wigs

Patients undergoing chemotherapy may suffer temporary hair loss. Wigs, hairpieces or other headwear supplies may be obtained from the wig outlets included in our Services Directory.

The Prince of Wales Hospital at Randwick has a Wig Library which is open only on Tuesdays from 9 am to 12 :30 pm. The Wig Library is now located on the ground floor of the Vera Adderley Building. This is located behind Ronald McDonald House near the Barker Street entrance to the Hospital - it is the very tall dark brick building.  For further information during these hours please ring 9382 0428 or 9832 2119 at any other time. Appointments are no longer necessary.

Private Health Insurance benefits for wigs

You may be eligible to claim up to 85% of the cost of wig through your private health insurance fund. Check eligibility entitlements with your health fund prior to purchase. In order to claim, you will need a doctor's referral for a wig and the invoice with details of the purchase.

Other Financial Assistance for wigs

Financial Assistance to purchase a wig may be available to eligible public hospital patients through the Patients Assistance Fund. Please check with the Social Worker regarding your eligibility.

Counselling for hair loss

For many people, the loss of hair may cause further anxiety in what may already be a stressful time. It may help to talk with a social worker about your concerns. To access counselling services please contact The Social Work Department at Royal North Shore Hospital on 02 9926 7580.
