What is Cansupport?
Cansupport is a cancer support and information service for people with cancer, their families and carers. Cansupport office is located within the Department of Clinical Oncology at Royal North Shore Hospital.
What does Cansupport offer?
Having cancer can be a lonely and frightening experience for patients and family members. Support and information is available to assist them to deal with the uncertainty and stresses that a cancer diagnosis can bring.
Cansupport offers support and information through
1. Telephone counselling and referral
2. One to one peer support from volunteers with cancer experience
3. Information meetings for people dealing with cancer
4. Specific support and information programs for breast and prostate cancer
5. Other programs include:
- These workshops are dedicated to teaching women beauty techniques to help restore their appearance and self image during chemotherapy and radiation treatment.
- Seminars and workshops
Cansupport programs provide an atmosphere which is both optimistic and realistic in order to explore the cancer journey with other patients and experienced volunteers.
Volunteers
Cansupport has a team of trained volunteers who have experienced a range of different cancers or have cared for someone with cancer. These volunteers are trained to use their own experience in dealing with cancer, to offer support to new patients. Support is either provided at group peer support programs or on a one to one basis.
Who can attend?
Patients any age with cancer diagnoses, their relatives and friends and health professionals
