Research and Development
Through cancer research, scientists have increased our understanding of cancer. In undertaking research, scientists are:
- Looking for specific substances in people with cancer and similarities in them that may help them find an answer to the cause of the various cancers.
- Finding out why certain cancer cells are resistant to treatment.
- Exploring why certain genes make a person more vulnerable to cancer or why certain genes make a person more resistant to anti-cancer drugs
- Continually testing various substances for their ability to fight cancer or for their potential to cause it.
- Learning more about cancers and why they develop.
- Researching on ways to prevent/control or even cure cancer.
- Working towards improving care and quality of life for cancer survivors.
Here at Northern Sydney Health, Cancer research is done by research groups such as The The Bill Walsh Cancer Research Laboratories and Northern Blood Research Centre. The Kolling Institute of Medical Research is affiliated to the University of Sydney.
