Screening Programs

Screening programs that are available to detect cancers enable early detection of cancer. If a cancer has been diagnosed at the early stages, it means that there are more treatment options and the chances of survival are better. Survival is lower if the cancer has already spread to other parts of the body when it is diagnosed. As an example, about 9 out of 10 women whose cancer is diagnosed before it has spread outside the breast will be alive 5 years later. However, if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body at diagnosis, only about 2 out of 10 women will be alive 5 years later.

The risk of death due to particular cancers may be reduced through intensive monitoring of individuals at high risk, reducing external risk factors, detecting and treating cancers early in their development through screening, and treating them in accordance with the best available evidence.

The following are some of the Screening programs that are currently available:

Bowel Cancer Screening

Breast Cancer Screening

Cervical Cancer Screening
