Early Detection of Breast Cancer

What is BreastScreen NSW ?

BreastScreen NSW is a government funded public health program which provides free screening mammograms to women 50-69 years.  BreastScreen NSW is part of a nationwide program aimed at the reducing the number of deaths to breast cancer through early detection.

Why is having a mammogram a good idea ?

The best time to treat breast cancer is when it is very small.  A screening mammogram can detect breast cancer early, before you or your doctor notice a change.  A mammogram does not stop you from getting breast cancer but can detect it early, when there is a better chance of obtaining more effective treatment.

Who should come to BreastScreen ?

Women 50-69 years are encouraged to attend the program for regular screening, usually every two years.  Screening is for women with no current breast problems.

How do I make an appointment ?

To make an appointment for screening, please call 13 20 50 and you will be connected to your local screening service.  For interpreter assistance when making your booking, please call 13 14 50.

Screening appointments are provided in various locations including mobile units and permanent screening centres.

What should I do if I have a breast problem ?

Women of any age who have a breast problem such as a lump, pain or nipple discharge should see their general practitioner without delay.
