The Bill Walsh Cancer Research Laboratories

The Bill Walsh Cancer Research Laboratories is located within the Clinical Oncology Department at Royal North Shore Hospital. The research done at The Bill Walsh Cancer Research Laboratories aims to improve cancer treatment. This is done through better understanding of the molecular biology of cancer and cancer treatment. Research at the laboratories is mainly focused on lung cancer, breast cancer and leukaemia and the findings from these are generally applicable to all forms of cancer. Research staff run a community information service for cancer research and can deliver talks to community groups about cancer research or cancer in general.

Research at The Bill Walsh Cancer Research Laboratories focuses on three ways of improving cancer treatment:

  • To determine how cancers become resistant to chemotherapy and radiotherapy and to investigate new treatment strategies
  • To develop ways of reducing unwanted side-effects of chemotherapy and
  • To reduce the growth and spread of cancer
