Welcome

Welcome to Cancer Services website (an initiative of Cancer Services in Northern Sydney Central Coast Health), an interactive website that provides patients, their carers, their relatives and interested others with information about the treatment facilities available in Northern Sydney and Central Coast in addition to providing some general information about cancer. The site has been developed after extensive consultations with consumers, carers and clinical staff.

Story From a Patient

Annette's Bowel Cancer Journey

Photograph of Annette McKay

In early September 2001 my local Doctor suggested I have a colonoscopy and you can imagine the shock of finding out that I had bowel cancer and that I should have surgery as soon as possible.

After consulting with my surgeon and informing him that I already had made travel arrangements to fly to the US to mind a grand daughter while my daughter-in-law went into hospital to have a second child, he agreed that if I insisted I should go. Everything went well and I said nothing to the family and returned and had the necessary surgery. Luckily, I am one of the fortunate ones - no lymph nodes were involved and no follow-up treatment was necessary.

Following my surgery I became aware of Cansupport and completed my training in March 2003 and now hope that training may help other newly diagnosed patients through difficult times. My cancer journey has certainly made me aware of how important life is, by living and helping others.
